The People’s Book Prize – a new experience

Catryn Power’s Short Stories book was the best reason to be at The Stationers’ Hall on Tuesday.  Near St Paul’s Cathedral, it was a special setting where it seems there are functions every night. Wonderful portraits on the dark paneled walls were inspiring and elegant staircases led us into a long room for the dinner, after drinks in another parquet floored reception room. A kitchen and wine cellar meant some thought and skill went into dinner for seventy which was a way of celebrating the work of the finalists in these awards. The feeling of camaraderie amongst the authors was expressed in good luck exchanges and admiration of frocks and suits.

Sir Frederick Forsyth was one of the patrons who presented the awards and he had plenty of encouragement for winners and under winners. He and Catryn had plenty to talk about, having lived in Lismore for many years – Catryn comes from Youghal.

Founder Tatiana Wilson spoke about the importance of giving first time authors a chance in the marketplace, based on their talent and ability and she made special mention of Catryn Power’s talent. Not that she needed it, but Catryn has been spurred on to finish her next book, and we have ideas for more. Result!

The book is available in Waterstones and at onstream.ie. Profits have already gone to a Parkinson’s support group
